Student Experiences

Sharoni is committed to the study, practice, and teaching of yoga according to the teaching of BKS Iyengar. She brings a modern and practical interpretation of the ancient teachings to her students so that they are relatable in today's world. Her teaching style is playful, precise and challenging. I always have fun in her class while at the same time coming away feeling refreshed and stronger. She is very confident in her ability to guide her students, and as a result, she helps us to achieve poses that we may not have thought possible. When your teacher believes in you, you come to believe in yourself. Sharoni's ability to recognize where and how her students should adjust or modify their poses enables her to give instructions that will keep her students safe while they push themselves to new levels. I have been Sharoni's student for more than a decade and have seen how consistent practice adds up over time. Her teaching has improved my physical balance, strength, and mobility, and has opened my eyes to the importance of the yoga postures to calm the nerves, encourage healthy breathing, and to clear the mind. We are so fortunate to have a teacher of Sharoni's caliber in our community.

Learning from Sharoni has been transformative for both my physical and mental well-being. I was introduced to Sharoni soon after being diagnosed with a slipped disc in my lumbar spine, which had severely limited my mobility and left me bedridden for weeks due to intense pain.

Sharoni approached my injury with intelligence, care, and a remarkable attention to detail. Not only did she develop a tailored plan to address the injury—focusing on tractioning and strengthening my back —but she also taught me a short home practice that alters the quality of my day when I practice it. Sharoni has steadfastly been there, tapping into her deep knowledge of Mr. B.K.S. Iyengar's teachings to find ways to ease the pain on the bad days. And on the good days, she has taught me to push my limits and go out of my comfort zone to strengthen my back. Today, I can proudly say I enjoy backbends—something I never imagined possible a year ago.

After a year and a half of consistent practice with Sharoni, I’ve regained the ability to ride a bike, spend long hours at a desk in relative comfort, and feel a sense of calm and mental stillness. Recent diagnostic imaging shows that my slipped disc has healed, and I’m confident that this healing is a direct result of Sharoni’s guidance and care.

What truly sets Sharoni apart is her passion and joy for teaching. She brings a sincerity and love to her classes, and her ability to lead large groups while still addressing each individual’s specific needs is inspiring. I am incredibly grateful for the community, friendship, and healing she has brought into my life - she (literally and figuratively) has my back.

It was a weekend of enrichment; exploring the eight limbs of Yoga! An immersion into the brilliance of BKS Iyengar’s teachings. The Calgary Yoga community is so fortunate to have Sharoni Fixler distill her experience in France with Faeq Biria (long- time direct student of BKS Iyengar) in a weekend workshop. I highly recommend anyone who is able to take advantage of this opportunity next summer- it is a rich learning opportunity.

I had the pleasure of taking Sharoni’s Neck and Shoulders Workshop during a time that I was experiencing chronic pain in this area. Sharoni’s teachings were practical to initiate into my home practice, and effective in my healing. Sharoni is a knowledgeable practitioner who is patient and kind in her delivery.
